Beware Kielder! Tracks to nowhere…

September 13th, 2012 by chris

Reader Alyson Learmonth has written in to let us know about the chaos around Kielder:

I am writing to let you know about a problem with access between Bailey Mill and Kielder. A party of 4 of us were travelling from Bailey Mill to Kielder. At noon we reached the watershed neaqr Scotch Howe. There we were confronted by a very forbidding Forestry Commission sign saying that the route was closed until 2013 because of felling and we should re-route via Bloody Bush. We re-traced our path to Kershaw Bridge, carefully checking to see if we had overlooked an earlier warning of the closure:one overgrown notice of harvesting was noted, but it idd not say the route was closed. On the way a Forestry Commission landrover stopped and the driver said he could not comment on harvesting or the route on the Englsih side of the border. We took refuge in Newcastleton, but the delay and deviation meant we did not complete the route, a pity as we greatly enjoyed the earlier part travelling from West to East.

Please can the Forestry Commission on both sides of the Border be asked to give adequate warning of any closures at the start of the Forest sections. Please also can you advertise the temporary route via Bloody Bush on your web site in as eye catching a way as possible!
