Route : if you are not stopping in Walton or Stapleton, continue to Hethersgill by turning left onto the B6318 (having first turned right at Askerton Castle), then first right at Knorren Lodge.

If you are going on to Low Luckens or New Pallyards, follow the route past Hethersgill and up to Boltonfellend where, instead of turning left, head straight on, bearing left at the junction with the main road. Continue across the river, taking the second left for New Pallyards, or first right for Low Luckens. If opting for the latter, take a further right after 500m, opposite a farm a kilometre or so up the road; follow a metalled road up to Low Luckens. This delightful backwater is called Roweltown.

There is not a huge amount at Hethersgill, a place whose economy has been traditionally fuelled by peat extraction. You can stop for a pint at the Black Lion pub, which belongs to the same folk who run the Drove Inn at Stapleton, near Hethersgill.

Route: From Hethersgill follow signs to Boltonfellend and head lett to Kirklinton. Here you are on the river Lyne, not far from Longtown. There are lots of tiny communities dotted around here.
