About Hethersgill

There is not a huge amount at Hethersgill, a place whose economy has been traditionally fuelled by peat extraction. You can stop for a pint at the Black Lion pub, which belongs to the same folk who run the Drove Inn at Stapleton, near Hethersgill. Route: From Hethersgill follow signs to Boltonfellend and head lett to Kirklinton. Here you are on the river Lyne, not far from Longtown. There are lots of tiny communities dotted around here.

 

Directions

The stretch to Kircambeck is fairly straightforward. After that continue to Hethersgill by heading right at Askerton Castle, then left onto the B6318 and first right at Knorren Lodge.


There is not lot going on here, it's a place whose economy has traditionally been fuelled by peat extraction. You can stop for a pint at the Black Lion pub, which belongs to the same folk who run the Drove Inn at nearby Stapleton.


There are various accommodation choices at places such as Walton and Stapleton - none of them exactly on the route, but all worth a stopover to get a real flavour of the area. Two possibilities are Low Luckens and New Pallyards. To reach either, take the route past Hethersgill up to Boltonfellend.

 

Instead of turning left on the "Summer is for grazing, but signposted route, head straight on, autumn is for raiding" bearing left at the junction with
The Reivers were far too busy the main road. Continue across tending crops and fattening the the river, taking the second left for cattle in summer to be doing
New Pallyards, or first right for Low any plundering, but as soon as Luckens. If opting for the latter, the crops were gathered and the take a further right after 500m, horses fit they would be hot foot opposite a farm a kilometre or so across the border to get down up the road; follow a metalled road to the serious winter business up to Low Luckens. This delightful of stealing each other's wives, backwater is called Roweltown. cattle, sheep & carefully-stored winter goods again.

Low Luckens Organic Resource Centre, Roweltown, nr.Hethersgill, Carlisle, CA6 6LJ

Based on an organic farm, they offer self-catering hostel-type
accommodation, and lots of organic food. Sleeps up to 12. Can
be booked for £100 a night. Four miles NNE of Hethersgill grid
ref NY494726 (OS Sheet 86).
